Hey look at this Cecil I drew (with brilliant colors by Dave McCaig).

The Invincible NEW EDITION trade paperbacks are releasing every other month now and vol. 9 will be out on May 20th, 2025!  How cool is that don't answer

Anyway, with that being the case, I figured I'd share a bit of the process here on the ol' blog.

Initially, my inclination was to do a version of Cecil that leaned a bit more toward Ryan's original in the comics, but it just didn't feel quite right.

...and so, I worked on it a bit, and came up with something more in the vein of Cecil's look in the massively popular animated cartoons show, while feeling a bit like the comic as well.

At that stage, I also settled into the clasped hands pose and worked out the lighting for the final.  Without any other problems to solve, I did a tight little pencil pass and the rest is history!  Is that cool?? Still don't answer ok.

Peep u next time, killer.  It'll either be process stuff for vol. 10 or it won't be.  I'm excited to find out!

I probably should have made this post sooner, but the book is out now and the post comes better late than never am I right. 

Anyway, enjoy it.  Also look at the first notions I had for the cover, which felt kinda dull, and honestly didn't work for me, given the assets on display and the divisiveness of the character etc etc I dunno.

Hey look at this 8Man I drew.

Back in olden times, when I was a wee lad of like 16 or whatever and living in a small New Mexico town, one of my only avenues to experience anime was Saturday nights on the SciFi channel.  That's exactly where I first saw 8Man After and though I don't think of it often, I loved the shit out of it back then.  Probably doesn't hold up to the greats, but it's cool enough and homeboy looks cool as heck.

ANYway.  That's all I guess.  Enjoy the below supplemental drawing of our guy in a classic John Romita Jr. running pose.  See you next time and I hope you're enjoying season 3 of Invincible.

 

The Walking...DOG?!???!11

 

Hey, look at this Doctor Morgan I drew (from ScienceDog).

So, last week on Nov. 6th, The Walking Dead Deluxe came was released in comic shops and while some of you may have known that, I think what you didn't know is that that's where we stuck the next chapter of ScienceDog.

That's right!  Chapter 3, printed IN FULL (6 pages were previously released in Image! #12) but TWD Deluxe #100 contains all 12, which INCLUDES a page I redrew.  Let me know in the comments if you spot which page it was!

Hey look at this pile of people I drew.

I've been wanting to share stuff a little more regularly, but there's not a whole lot I do that's shareable these days so this time we've got something a little different for you.

A while back I was watching NoPixel GTA RP streams pretty regularly and wanted to do a drawing of my favorite gang. So, I worked up this prelim that I was then gonna finish up nice but work got in the way and before I could get back to it, the gang had kinda fallen apart and then I stopped watching with any regularity so this is as far as it will go.  Pretty sad, but that's the way it goes sometimes, big dog.

I hope 4Head is doing well out there.  Y'all there was this time he stole a police officer's bicycle and that was the funniest shit I wish you had been there.

Not a whole lot to say here so I won't say a lot here.  The one odd sketch felt a little too much like the vol. 5 cover (coincidentally, out today if you're reading this today) which is why I went another way with it, and I think that worked out for the best.

Hey look at this Kamen (and chonky baby Hollow) I drew to remind you all that Scavenger's Reign is now on Netflix in the US, UK, Ireland, and New Zealand and you should watch it if you can because it is great.

"But cory," you're saying "I already watched it on that other platform."  Yeah.  So did I.  Doesn't mean you shouldn't look at it again.  That's what I'm doing right now because I am very selfish and would like it to do well so I can watch a second season and maybe even more than that who knows.

Avoid Reveals (??)

Hey, look at this sketch I did for my cover of Void Rivals #10.

Yeah bay-bee another cover from me, cory.  The final cover was shared by Skybound on their social media so I figured to myself, I figured "Well since it's out there, I can share it here, but even better what if I don't do that and instead share my initial sketch?"  So! That's what this is and you can see what the work looks like before I wring every last bit of life out of it.

This Keeps Happening

Hey look at this Angstrom Levy brain guy I drew.  

If you guessed that this is the cover for the Invincible NEW EDITION tpb vol. 6, then you guessed right, but did you also guess that it is scheduled to be released on Nov. 19, 2024?  Didn't think so.

This one was a little frustrating because I worked those brain junks out just for most of it to be obscured by the logo.  And it's the only one of these covers where the figure sits behind the logo instead of in front of it and you'd think that if I had any of these brain junks of my own, that I would have thought about that.  

Anyway, below is the final, colored cover by the fantastic Dave McCaig.  He's great.  I'll never work with another colorist.

Hey look at this Invincible(!?) I drew.

This week, the second season of the extremely popular, critically-acclaimed animated cartoon show "Invincible" (based on the comic by the same name) comes to a close as the finale will be released on Amazon's Prime streaming service and guess what you might see this fella if you look at the show instead of pawing at your phone the whole time or getting up to fist another iced cream sandwich.  

He's very cool and definitely nice and not a mean kind of guy for sure.  Just look at that smile.  Anyway, do as he says and I'll see you back here next time.

Book It

 

Hey look at this #1 Mom I drew.  This must have been done VERY early on in the production of the first season of the critically acclaimed smash-hit animated television cartoon show "Invincible" (Available on Amazon's Prime streaming service). I was still trying to work out the approach and wrap my head around designing for animation so these aren't quite on model, but I thought they'd be fun to share.

Why share though?  Why now? 

Hey, those are questions for which I have an answer.  After a minor delay, "The Art of Invincible Season 1" (a book published by Image Comics) is finally out for you to paw through with your grubby little fingers.  You can find it at finer comic shops and even websites that sell such things if that's how you gotta do it.

There's a lot of neat stuff in there and it's a shame we couldn't fit EVERYTHING, but I hope you like what you get, my sweet piggies.

p.s. it's a little embarrassing, the book reads like it's the Cory Walker show, but I had a lot of help from some experienced and extremely skilled and talented folks.  Primarily Dou Hong and Nate Bellegarde on character stuff, but so many contributed to the visual DNA of the show, so please don't skip the credits in the back of the book. Thanks.

Hey look at this back cover I drew for the slipcase of The Complete Invincible Library Vol. 6 (available June 11, 2024)

You read that right, the BACK cover for the slipcase and you know what that means!  Like the slipcase for Vol. 1 of The Complete Invincible Library, the front was drawn by Ryan "Real Good" Ottley with me drawing the reverse of his shot for the back.  It's a fun challenge and hopefully a fun slip case to hold all of your slips.

Speaking of "back" the smash-hit animated cartoon program "Invincible" (based on the comic series by Kirkman, Ottley and Walker) is BACK with part 2 of season 2 on Amazon's Prime streaming service.  So if you haven't already, get in there and glaze your eyeballs with its goodness.

Hey look at this Invincible I drew.  Yeah they keep releasing these things, and this one is for the NEW EDITION Invincible TPB vol.5 which releases six months from today on September 6th 2024. 

Speaking of which, the New Edition TBP vol.3 is out TODAY! (3/6/24). So if you like a manga-sized book filled with Invincible comics you know and love or maybe haven't read yet, then find yourself a place that trades books for money or even other goods and snag yourself a copy.

Hey look at this Allen the Alien I drew.

Since the cover for the Invincible New Edition Vol. 4 is out there and available to public eyes, I thought I would post some process stuff that is not very process-y because it's not a complex concept and not very process intensive but there were sketches that vary slightly from one another so check them out ok.  Please.  

So this is obviously just an alternate lighting take on what became the final.  Also here, you can see hints of the Kanzlok that I had originally toyed with the idea of including on the cover.  Ultimately though it didn't really support the threatening vibe we were going for.

And here is an option for a closer crop, which was obviously too much.

Going even further backwards, here's the earliest sketch of what would be the final, minus the Kanzlok.

Along with that first sketch, I had also done a more friendly approach, again with the Kanzlok but this didn't feel right. As much as I love a grinning goofball the more dramatic option felt like it would be more of an attention-getter.

Six Thousand Is a Crowd

Hey look at this flap-headed space gladiator I drew.

Hard to believe, but Invincible (the comic) ended with issue #144 six years ago today on Feb 14, 2018, but since then a lot has happened with Invincible (the...thing? beyond the comic. you get it) and I'm looking forward to seeing what more happens with Invincible The Thing in the next six years.

I don't have a lot of behind the scenes stuff to share that hasn't been published/seen already, so I will just talk briefly about this spread that I did for issue #144.

Believe it or not, I didn't have a good time drawing this.  I think I was already behind, as ever, and just couldn't visualize what I wanted the space to look like etc etc etc etc.  So working on it was miserable but in the end, I am happy enough with how it turned out (thanks in no small part to the color magic of Nathan Fairbairn).  Part of my problem was that I zoom in too far when drawing digitally, so I have this crowd that wasn't worth spending as much time on as I did because they probably printed too small to even perceive. SO! I thought it would be fun to put some shots of them on the ol' blog so y'all can take a look at them and maybe even like one or two of them.  Sound cool?  Ok nice let's do it.

This Place Is a Dump
