Dog... Something... Flies With Honey (??)

Hey look at this weird little guy I drew.

So! As you know, I went to the San Diego Comicbook Convention in sunny San Diego, CA and had a cool time seeing old friends and walking the floor and meeting Invincible fans in their cosplay and also not in their cosplay and what I mean is they were just dressed like regular people not that they were in the buff.

ANYWAY.  That stuff isn't all I did!  You know about the Atom Eve special episode but did you also know that we did a panel to discuss 20 years of Invincible and I was on it and didn't even die of embarrassment?  And during that panel I brought up a little factoid about how I had drawn a dog for Oliver in Invincible #85 and Robert hated it and threatened to have me killed if I didn't erase it from the print files NOW.   But he didn't say anything about erasing the dog from the jpgs! So you get to see them here and can compare them to the printed pages in your own time or even just don't do that it's fine.

For your viewing pleasure or maybe displeasure, here's Inv #85 pages 04 and 13.  Featuring what would have been Oliver's flying dog companion (and yes obviously it was inspired by my little old baby, HeatVision the dog).

Hey look at this line art I did for the poster promoting the SURPRISE Atom Eve special episode that dropped by SURPRISE on Amazon's Prime streaming service Friday the 21st.  It was extremely cool to be able to help out with this key art and even extremely cooler that the episode is out and to see how much people are enjoying it.

SDCC was cool and it was nice to see old friends, make new friends, and meet so many Invincible fans.

I also helped out a little with the Invincible Season 2 poster, so you can look at the final product here, even though you've certainly already seen it.

November 3 will be here before you know it.  And maybe I'll even make another post before then.

You Got to Cool It Now

Hey look at this Atom Eve cover rough I did for vol 3 of the NEW EDITIONS of the Invincible trade paperbacks to be released in a 6x9 format.  Nice.

I say "rough" but this is more or less the pencils for the cover which I blew up and finished on my computer screen.

Anyway, I'm sharing this because unless you're reading this from the past, the first volume of the NEW EDITIONS is out now!  And not only can you see the final version of the above drawing in the back, but also, the cover for vol 4 as well!  Lucky.  I mean, they're printed small, but you still get to see them.

I dunno if I'll post again before the event, so I'll take this opportunity to mention that I will be at ComicCon in sunny San Diego for the first time since before the plague and I'm looking forward to celebrating 20 years or whatever of Invincible.  There will be panels where we'll talk about the comic and also maybe even the future of the juggernaut smash-hit Amazon Prime animated cartoon show.

Dunno if I will be involved in any signings or anything like that because let's face it who wants that no one that's who but if you see me, no you didn't.

Hey look at this old Tick page that I drew.

2006 strikes again, with another throwback to times that were different from what they are now. This was a single page featured in The Tick 20th Anniversary Special Edition #1, for you trivia buffs out there. Written by my cool pal Benito Cereno, drawn by me (cory) with questionable color choices by also me (cory).  Maybe someday I'll tell you who lettered it.

I *think* I was approached to work on this project and couldn't think of a cooler pal than Benito to write it, so I asked him and he said "yes," enthusiastically I'm sure. 

Benito even went on to write a man-sized pile of other Tick comics, which was excellent and The Tick and Invincible even did a team-up.  Pretty cool right?

Ok, that'll do it for this.  Maybe next time I'll have something NOT from 2006, but I refuse to make any promises.

Hey look at this Hellboy('s crotch) I drew for an UpperDeck card set (which I think was a game??) wayyy back in 2006.

You ever draw something and have ZERO memory of it?  Yeah, that's my relationship with the three pieces you see here.  I drew a total of four cards for the set (I think), the fourth of which I DO remember, but only because it has an accompanying story that makes me wish I was just completely dead and gone forever, never to lose another second of sleep thinking about it ever again.

Anyway, here's some stuff I don't remember having drawn and their presence in my email is the only real evidence that I did.

You're Not Sick Are You

Hey look at this Immortal I drew.  I know it's not much, but I felt like I had been neglecting the ol' blog and "not much" is better than nothing.

Someday I'll figure this guy out and draw him consistently, but so far it's been a real struggle for me.  All the way back to the early days of Invincible I couldn't draw him the same way twice. Between you and me I think that carried over to the wildly popular smash-hit Amazon Prime animated cartoon show "Invincible" where maybe the materials I did for him later in the production don't quite look like the same guy I drew at the start.  

I guess I could post these kinds of scraps more often and keep this place interesting, right? Is that something you'd like? Let me know in the comments.

Twenty Years?

Hey look at this Invincible #1 cover I drew.  I know, I also thought I had drawn this thing for the last time, but a while back I got this wild idea to redraw the first issue of Invincible in it's entirety (for fun?) and even though I only got a few pages in before realizing that my energy was best spent elsewhere, it was still kinda neat to revisit these early pages and compare them to what I had done as a baby.  They've sat on my computer unseen for a while now and I couldn't think of a better time than the 20th anniversary of the first issue's release to share them with you.  Have fun looking at them and saying "I liked the old stuff better."

Also! Robert, Ryan and I recently chatted with CBR about 20 years of Invincible and you can see what that looks like here.

Better Late 2023 Than Never 2023

Hey look at this teaser for the much-anticipated second season of the smash hit animated cartoon show "Invincible" on Amazon's Prime streaming service.

Who are those other people in the Burger Mart?  Really makes you think.

Anyway, this upcoming Sunday the 22nd marks(wink) the 20th anniversary of the first issue of Invincible.  Would that be a good time for a new post on this blog?  I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I just finished a much-needed rewatch of Gurren Lagann and I wouldn't have guessed that he'd be the character I would draw, but here we are.  Fuckin' Rossiu.  Honestly, it's probably because I have no affection for this mess that I was able to draw him.  For someone like Viral or Kamina, I would be too worried about getting them right, but for Rossiu it's like "Eh this isn't great but neither is he so it's fine."

Invincible Spoilers

 

Hey look at this Young Lady Omni-man I drew.

Yeah, you heard me right. Young Lady Omni-man.  So, I had hoped that somehow, within the events of the final issue of Invincible, Terra could have taken on the mantle of Young Lady Omni-Man (with Ursaal maybe playing the part of Invinci-girl) but it wasn't something that really fit into the narrative that Robert had planned, which is for the best, but a nice and cool and fun idea all the same.

And here's a fun Invinci-bit of Invinci-trivia for you, Terra's hairstyle at this age was a nod to Akko from Little Witch Academia.  Put that in your hat and pull it out at a party or any time you want to impress that special someone.  Tell them we're best friends.  They'll say "who?"

New to You, Anyway

Hey, look at this Supergirl I drew in 2014.  I was just watching some Ranma 1/2 and remembered the time that I had the bright idea to take an outfit Akane was wearing and turn it into a Supergirl.  I don't think I ever posted this on the old blog (RIP), so even if it's not new, it is new though.

Anyway, in the process of digging that up, I came across some other old stuff that I figured I'd go ahead and toss up on internet.  These are mostly from 2014-2018, with the exception being the last shot of Vampire Batgirl which was done in 2020.  Enjoy!  Or don't!

 

Medium Wet Spell

I know you think you are imagining things, doing big cartoon eye blinks *doink*doink* but don't splash your sweet face with cold water, what you're seeing is real!  It's Supra-Man and his hero son Bulletproof, visiting the ol' blog from an adjacent universe where no one cared about costumes being "iconic" or getting sued by DC.  Weird to think about how things played out differently over there.  Did I make it past 6 and a half issues?  Probably not, tbh.

Anyway this is a fucking failure because it was supposed to be quick and nasty and instead I was too precious with the lines, as ever.  I'm trying, I swear!

Ok well I hope you liked this because I did it for you.

I'm off!  Gotta get back to working on those comic pages that literally tens of people are waiting to read.

Remember When I Was Gonna Be Less Boring

I know what you're gonna say, and let me stop you there.  This character is completely different from any character who may have a similar logo or even a character that you think you remember from Medabots or anything like that.  

This is a brand new thing which I came up with independent of any outside influence or inspiration ok.  You're fuckin' DREAMING if you think you've seen anything like this before.

Hey look at this old turtle I drew.

Did you ever look at Destroyer?  I think that it's one of the few things I've done in the past twenty years that I feel pretty good about.  Weird that Marvel hasn't done anything with Destroyer beyond that miniseries.  I guess that's the house of "ideas" for you.  If it's not a Spider-man event where everyone is a Spider-man or some mash-up of existing characters like Night Thrasher being Galactus then Marvel ain't doing it.  I dunno.

Anyway, Destroyer was cool.  I seem to recall there being a black and white bootleg floating around a couple years ago.  Would love to get my hands on one of those.

Ok, well, I'm gonna go learn how to draw.

When He's Not Leadin' Mass, He's Out Kickin' Ass

 

Hey look at THIS Battle Pope I drew.  What a difference two weeks makes, am I right?

So, the Pope I did in the previous post was trash  Now, I know you're thinkin' "Didn't cory say he wasn't gonna be a damp toilet paper on the blog?" But, consider this: if it's the truth, AM I being a damp toilet paper?  Am I?  Because I'm not saying it was trash like I'm a sad sack little baby needs a new diaper.  I am looking at my work objectively and saying, "Y'know what? That Pope I did was trash, and not even a trash that could be another man's treasure, but trash that is every man's trash, no exceptions."

And fair enough, the above drawing isn't without its flaws, but at least it's not just flat and dull. There's a lot I want to change about my work, but at the very least I want to be less boring.

Relieved that the other Pope won't be at the top of the blog anymore.  Woof.

Hey look at this Battle Pope I drew. I never could get him quite right. Oh well!

According to internet, my first published work "Battle Pope: Shorts" #2 released August 8, 2001.  And here we are 20 years later, acknowledging that my first published work "Battle Pope: Shorts" #2 released August 8, 2001.

What a 20 years it's been.

I've had my ups and downs, whoopsies and triumphs, disappointments and bigger disappointments, but have been fortunate enough to end up in a pretty good place.

Looking forward to doing more with the next 20 years.

America's Fighting Force (in a good way)

Hey look at this Johnny Armstrong I drew.  Remember when Kirkman and I did Superpatriot?  That's ok, sometimes I don't either.

But I forget a lot.  Sometimes I remember those issues of Shadowpact I drew and I'm like "whaaat?"  Which is crazy, because even though I've been working for almost 20 years, it's not like I've done a real whole lot.  You'd think I would remember every panel.

Not speaking negatively, of course! I’m trying not to be such a sour log on this blog.  All sweet log from here on out.

Oh!  I also did an issue of the Punisher where I got to draw the Rhino and Spider-man in his black costume.

There are only three really good Spider-man costumes and I bet you know which ones they are.  You have impeccable taste.  That's why I like you.

Speaking of how long I've been doing comics, next month (august) is the 20th anniversary of my first published work. So I dunno, I guess keep an eye on the ol' blog for some kind of thing to mark the occasion?

MAJ Letdown, Reporting For Duty

Sometimes I feel like a hobbyist who ended up doing something they enjoy professionally, but not at a professional level. Maybe I should have stuck to doodling for fun and been like, a mechanic or something.  

When I was a kid I wanted to be a brain surgeon.  Just think about all the brains that have gone un-surgeoned thanks to me doing mediocre drawings instead.

Sorry to be a wet bag of bread or whatever.  I've just been thinking a lot lately about how I draw compared to how I want to draw and how difficult it is to break old habits.

Hey look at this idiot.  Did I tell you that I like Naruto?  It's a relatively recent development, but I uh, yeah, I like it.  I haven't gotten through all of it though, so please no spoilers in the comments.
